Samuel Baker Claytor married Elizabeth Graves Lovick (b. about 1836 in North Carolina) in 1866. Elizabeth (Lovick) became a young widow. Soon after she became a widow the Civil War broke out and the Confederate Army stationed a battery of artillery on the old Yadkin Hill over looking the river in Kinston. Among these soldiers was a man by the name of Samuel Baker Claytor. Elizabeth and Samuel met, fell in love and married in 1866. He died 12/22/1916 in Raleigh, North Carolina and was interred in Oakwood Cemetery - Raleigh, North Carolina (Confederate Section). ----- M230 roll 7

Joel was born 15 Sept 1831 at White Hall, Wayne Co. NC. He enlisted from Lenoir Co. NC as a Volunteer on 30 Jun 1862 at age 33. He served honorably throughout the war. Serving primarily in the Heavy Artillery in defense of the Costal Forts around Wilmington, NC. While his main assignment was Fort Fisher the men of that unit were assigned temporarily at other local forts. When Fort Fisher fell, and Wilmington was overrun the men were assigned to the Infantry in Hagood's Legion. He has 21 cards in his archival file. He suffered from hemorrhoids and was hospitalized at Wilmington and given a 60-day furlough with Post Office at Moseley Hill, NC. He was the Father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed Martha Patsy Sutton. He died 8 Apr 1919 and is buried in the Elmore family cemetery in LaGrange, Kinston, NC

William was born 22 Sept 1832 in Moseley Hall, Lenoir Co. NC. He volunteered 30 Jun 1862. He was 33 years old and enlisted by Capt. Sutton. He has 20 cards in his archival file. 26 Sep 1864 he is sick in CSA hospital #4 in Wilmington, NC with dx of Febris Remittius. He is returned to duty on 1 Oct. The primary mission of this unit was costal defense of the Forts along the NC coast. He saw service at several of the forts. With the fall of Fort Fisher, the unit was disbanded, and most were reassigned as Infantry. On 2 March 1865 he is admitted to CSA Hospital #3 at Raleigh NC with gunshot wound to left arm. It is here while a patient the city fell to the invaders, and he was taken as a POW. He survived the war and died on 19 Aug 1903. He is the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed. Company D served garrison duty at Fort Johnston in Smithville, Fort Holmes on Smith Island, and Fort Fisher on the Cape Fear River. Captured with the fall of Fort Fisher on Jan 15, 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, MD POW camp. Released with Oath of Allegiance on Jun 28, 1865. Died Dec 19, 1909 in Pamlico Co. and buried on the Jones Family Farm on Trent Rd. near Merritt, NC. 'A loyal Confederate soldier' noted on his tombstone.

Malcolm is my 4th great uncle. He was stationed at Fort Fisher and died of Typhoid in Smithville, NC in 1862. He is the son of Kemp Culbreth and Mary McNeill.

They were privates in the 40th NC State Troops (aka 3rd NC Artillery) which was formed from the 'Scotch Greys Artillery Battery' in December 1863. The company retained the name 'The Scotch Greys' due to the large number of its troops of Scottish descent. Serving with them in the company were two of their first cousins, Doddridge and Neill McCallum. Thus, there were four McCallums helping to keep the port of Wilmington open. The unit spent most of its time at Fort Fisher or the surrounding area and the majority of its members were captured when Fisher fell on 15 January 1865. However, my great-grand uncle Daniel was killed on that day. The remaining three McCallums went to Point Lookout as POWs. They were later paroled in the summer after taking the Oath of Allegiance to the US government.

US ARMY MEXICAN WAR AND CONFEDERATE SOLDIER.
Thomas enlisted at the age of 43. He served in Co G, 3rd Regiment NC Artillery and later in the 2nd Regiment, NC Artillery. Captured 15 Jan 1865 at Fort Fisher, NC and was sent to Elmira Prison at Elmira, NY. He died 2 May 1865 of pneumonia and is buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery, grave #2007, Elmira, NY.

Elijah was 30 years old when he enlisted at Fort Branch NC on 20 July 1863. On 30 Oct. 1863 He was promoted to 4th Corporal. His unit saw action in Virginia. He became sick and was hospitalized for a long period. Then sent home to recover on a 60 day sick furlough in Anson County NC . He rejoins his unit and is captured at Fort Fisher NC and sent to Elmira arriving there on 15 Jan 1865. He was paroled 14 March 1865.

Lewis was born in the Wildwood Community of Carteret Co. NC in June 1838. He has CMR archival records in 3 regiments: the 17th NC Infantry / formerly the 7th NC Infantry Vol's] He has 5 cards which describe him as having been born in Carteret Co. NC., 21 y/o 5 feet 11.5 inches tall. occupation as Sailor. He is in Capt. L.J Johnsons Co H [ John Harvey Guards] Enlisted 20 May 1861 at Hertford and mustered at Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks of County NC.

1st Company I. 36th Regt 2nd Co NC Artillery. 2 cards, Capt. William A Herring's Co H 36th State Troops. On 4 Nov 1863 he is transferred to the 3rd Regiment NC Arty 40th State Troops. and became (3rd) Co G of that regiment. After the fall of the costal forts he was as most of the men into Infantry.

Lewis died 12 April 1924 at Morehead City, Carteret Co. NC and is buried at the Hill - Doughty Family Cem. at Newport, Carteret Co. NC. He was the father-in-law of my distant cousin Mary E Hill.

Davis was born in 1844 in Montgomery County, NC. he has 8 cards in his archival file. He was 18 years old when he enlisted at Fort Branch, NC on 20 July 1863. Co G. 3rd Heavy Artillery. He saw action at Forts, Holmes, Caswell, Campbell, Anderson & Fisher. When the forts were evacuated he was transferred to infantry and fought in the Carolina Campaign. The roster for this unit contained the names of 2008 men. He died 25 May 1917 and is buried in Chandlers Grove UMC Cem. in Montgomery Co. NC. He is my distant cousin.

Haywood was about 25 years old. Has 3 cards in his archival file. Enrolled on 29 Jan 1862 at New Bern, Craven County in Capt Alexander Latham's Co. [Branch Artillery] NC Vol's. Mustered into active Confederate Service at Morehead City, Carteret Co.NC. He was taken prisoner at New Bern NC on 14 Mar 1862. Their is one source that indicated that after parole that he served in Morehead City, NC in 18th Reg, 5th Brigade in defense of that city. Have not found this documentation in the archives.

Resided in Cabarrus County, Concord, NC enlisted in Charlotte, NC on 1 Nov 1864. Served in Co I, 40th NC Regiment, 3rd NC Artillery. Served at Fort Anderson near Wilmington, NC. Also served at North East River and Jackson Mill, NC. Took part in the Carolinas Campaign Feb. thru Apr. 1865 which included the Battle of Bentonville, NC. At Bentonville, remnants of the 3rd NC and the 2nd NC were used as infantry. Being used as infantry, they were referred to as 'Red Leg Infantry'. Became a POW at Bentonville when Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered.
Paroled after Bentonville and returned to Concord, Cabarrus County, NC and resumed farming. McKamey was very active in his church, Cold Water Baptist.
McKamey is buried at Cold Water Baptist Church, Cabarrus Co, Concord, NC.

He is captured near Fort Fisher 20 Nov 1865. This was a heavy Artillery unit and assigned to guard the Forts along the North Carolina Coast. After the fall of Fort Fisher, the men were reassigned as Infantry and many fought in the Carolina Campaign at Bentonville. The roster of the 3rd contained the names of 2008 men.

Andrew died 11 Jan 1911in Bladen County NC. He is buried at Bethlehem Church at White Oak, Bladen County, NC He was the father-in-Law of my cousin.
